On October 16, 2025, please join us in celebrating International Credit Union Day® at our SEA and ANC branches! International Credit Union Day® annually commemorates the credit union movement’s impact and achievements. Alaska Air Group Credit Union is one of more than 74,000 credit unions in the world serving 411 million members! On ICU Day, we join our fellow credit unions across the globe to celebrate the community commitment and positive economic and social change credit unions provide.
To celebrate ICU Day, we’re launching a fun, interactive challenge with our financial wellness partner, Banzai! Throughout the month of October, you have the opportunity to complete challenges and learn about a variety of different financial wellness topics. Completing the challenge will automatically enter you into a drawing for $50! Play along here!
This year, we celebrate 77 years of International Credit Union Day® in partnership with World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) and Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions (WFCU) under the theme “Cooperation for a Prosperous World”. With the United Nations declaring 2025 the International Year of Cooperatives under the theme “Building a Better World Together”, the ICU Day 2025 theme purposefully mirrors that to promote the ways credit unions help people across the globe achieve more prosperity and well-being through cooperative finance.
What makes credit unions unique compared to other financial institutions?
- Equal Ownership
- Credit unions are member-owned and member-operated. Each member has equal ownership and one vote regardless of how much money each member has in savings.
- Not for Profit
- Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives that provide a safe, convenient place for members to save money and access loans and other financial services at reasonable rates.
- Social Purpose: People Helping People
- Credit unions exist to serve their members, not to make a profit. Every member counts, including those of modest means. This “people-first” philosophy compels credit unions and their employees to get involved in their community and support worthwhile causes.
- Volunteer Leadership
- Each credit union is governed by a volunteer board of directors elected by and from the credit union’s membership.
- Financial Education for Members
- Credit unions place particular importance on educational opportunities for their members and the public to help everyone become better-educated consumers.
- Trust
- Credit unions are known for being trustworthy and resilient institutions during uncertain times. Credit union members worldwide can be proud of these accomplishments and rest assured that their money is safe at the credit union.
International Credit Union Day® is organized by World Council of Credit Unions, the global trade association and development platform for credit unions and other financial cooperatives, as well as numerous national credit union trade associations and federations around the world.
Make sure you participate in our International Credit Union Day financial wellness challenge for the chance to win $50! Play along here!
