Arbor Day 2024

Apr 2024 | Community Involvement, Credit Union News

How was Arbor Day established?

In the early 1870s, before Nebraska was a state, local journalist Julius Sterling Morton moved to Nebraska City, Nebraska. Coming from tree-dense New York, he took note of the flat land and began planting trees and shrubs at his new home.

Morton used his newspaper platform to spread his knowledge of trees and expressed the ecological importance of them. His environmental message resonated with his readers, and he quickly became involved with Nebraska Board of Agriculture.

Morton proposed the idea of a day to encourage all Nebraskans to plant trees in their community, and the Board of Agriculture agreed. April 10, 1872, was the inaugural Arbor Day celebration and contributed to the planting of approximately 1 million trees.

When did it become a holiday?

Arbor Day became a national holiday in 1970 by President Richard Nixon. This was a part of a series of environmentally focused actions including the Clean Air Act, Endangered Species Act, and the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Why do we celebrate Arbor Day?

We continue to celebrate Arbor Day each year to plant trees and recognize the importance of sustainably protecting our planet’s natural resources.

What day is Arbor Day?

In the United States, Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday in April. However, across the globe Arbor Day is celebrated by many different countries. The holiday is celebrated on different days across the world, depending on what season is best for tree planting.
